So I saw that this week's @bloghomework @missy and @rambo ask who are our favorite artists. There are many artists and pieces that I love and enjoy sharing. Here are just a few.
Pictured above is Rainbow Girl by Ghada Amer. She is uses embroidery thread and acrylic on canvas as her medium. The focus of much of her work is on femininity and sexuality. I am fascinated with how she blended the images of women with brightly colored thread.
Another artist that I enjoy is Felix Gonzalez-Torres. There is one piece by him that just gave me the chills when I first read about it.
"Untitled" (A Portrait of Ross in LA) was created as a representation of Gonzalez-Torres's partner Ross Laycock, who had recently died from complications of AIDS. In the corner of the gallery sits 175 pounds of cellophane wrapped candies. The 175 pounds represents Laycock's ideal weight. Viewers of the piece are encouraged to take a piece of the candy. The slowly decreasing pile of candy represents the ravages of AIDS on Laycock's body until his death. When the final piece is taken the artist stated that the pile be replenished so that in a way Ross Laycock has perpetual life.
