I personally have very little 'in common' with most of my friends and loved ones, but it's those few traits of 'smart, positive, good energy..when they are near me I can achieve anything' that are the crucial ones for me. I've culled lots of people who I have lots in common with, but were downers and/or judgmental or had tunnel-vision.
