It starts out with what could only be a Hammond B-3 organ pushed through Leslie speakers, heavy with bass pedals, and Roy's Tele; clear, fat notes - immersed in his soul's quest and longing.
He tells the story simply,
"I've walked in a lot of places
I never should have been
but I know that the Messiah
he will come again."
then his guitar tells it again, but with a heart sore clarity no one could possibly verbalize.
Just before Roy goes finger flailing way up beyond the 22nd fret is when I usually break down, and sob.
Cathartic release for those who know
the beauty of bent notes
wrapped around
and wrung out
encapsulating the pain
allowing us to endure.
