I'm not gonna talk about my first concerts I attended as a kid. I'm just gonna talk a little bit about my first festival I attended on my own. In the nineties, Belgium and Holland already had quite some festivals with a good reputation. But there where some differences with todays festivals.
- I only lasted for 1 day
- Only 1 stage
- About 9 bands in the lineup
My first festival was in 1992. IT was in Holland, Pinkpo, just across the border with were I live. 55000 visitors. It was a huge year in rock history. MTV Europe was HUGE. It was the breakthrough of rock in commercial charts. It was about the beginning (at least in Europe) of the grunge era. And this was about the lineup of Pinkpop '92: Buffalo Tom - PJ Harvey - Soundgarden - David Byrne - Pearl Jam - Lou Reed - The Cult. Even though I was a bit more into hardrock (Iron Maiden, Guns 'n Roses, Manowar, ...), we had nothing to complain about with this lineup. For us kids it was great to be able to see Soundgarden, Pearl Jam. I mean, come on! Soundgarden! Pearl Jam!
And to be honest, this concert WAS legendary. You should watch it. (Especially you, @quentin_ You're allowed to be jalous ;) ) Eddie Vedder stagediving... I think that should have been one of the first viral video's ever. (31-32 minutes, somewhere over there). Actually, being in that crowd that day (14 year old), it was huge but terrifying.
Later that summer, I decided I wanted to play guitar too, and one of the song books I bought were the TEN-tabs. Which was fun to play. In the beginning I couldn't play a single chord, but I mastered the Jeremy-riff :)
Some more Youtube-stuff from that festival: SOUNDGARDEN. It was my first time crowd surfing.
The end of this concert was quite legendary too. Pinkpop boss Jan Smeets didn't want them to play longer than midnight, The Cult didn't feel like stopping at midnight... so at the end, a furious Jan Smeets cut them off, which resulted in a furious crowd. Trowing bottles and dirt...
One more song to finish. 1992 -> Pearl Jam - Alive
Man, some of you even weren't born that day. I'm getting old :D
Hope you enjoyed, lovely people and @missy and @rambo and @lyxzen and everyone.
