It is currently the 3rd day of the 5 day drum camp. Made my way up to Canada last weekend. It's been an amazing experience so far. Most years, these camps have been for beginner to somewhat intermediate players. This year, they've made one especially for intermediate and advanced players. It is surprisingly kicking my ass and making me work hard and I get back to my hotel with sweaty clothes.
The fun part is that even though most of the things we're working on are fairly simple. There is one instructor who takes the time to throw me hints as to what to play or to copy him as to challenge me. While it appears I'm doing everything like everyone else, there are certain things I'm being told to do to try and push myself even further. To that extent, most people came with their reasons of why they are here. I had none, but now that I'm here, I'm starting to realize I might actually be more advanced than I thought.
So what happens when someone who is "advanced" is working with people not as advanced? I get challenged on the spot to do things most of the other (12 students) can't/won't normally do on the spot (YET). I say yet because they're learning as well, and one day they'll be great and that's the best part. We're all having fun, talking about drums, music, movies, life, etc. and It's totally amazing. I'm so glad I had the chance to do this.
Peace!
