THE BLOOD TRAVELS
12) Of course even a cat could have a bad day. Each and every day she would bask in the morning sun as it peered through the front pallor widow and lit up a square of green carpet that traveled across the room and finally up the back wall. After the sun had made its inspection of the room she would stretch first by arching her back then by leaning back and forward on her limbs.
Satisfied she would recline on the same spot and begin to lick her paws
starting with the front two first. She'd pause take a deep cat breath in
through her little mouth into the tip of her tail. Then in an instant with now
warning she leap straight up into the windowsill. She seemed to like the feel
and smell of the yellowed sheen curtain as it drifted across her face. And
there she would sit and there she would watch. Every day the same. Usually all the same people would pass at all the same times. Occasionally there would be an event. An accident or extreme weather. But for the most part the day came, and the day went. On morning in particular after many years on one single occasion she missed the windowsill when she leapt. Her front paws shot out and one of her claws latched into the yellowed curtain. The force of her movement and the poor condition of the curtain made her fall even more violent then if
she had fell free of the sill. Her little paw twist back then forth as she
struggled to free it. Finally the yellowed curtain torn and she feel to the
carpet. Her instinct was to dart away from the scene but something was wrong
with her paw. She made such a frightful noise that the elder man who fed her
came in quickly from the kitchen wiping his hands on his apron. Poor thing he
said as he shook his head, gently he picked her up and he put her in a box andtook her to the vet. Tears came to the old mans eyes as he was told she was
too old to have the broken limb set. Helpless tears of anger and regret. He
held her tight to his chest with one arm and scratched her behind the ear with
his free hand. He looked up at the vet who squirted liquid from a needle a
tear fell from his eye the cat purred gently in the mans arms they both had no
idea what to expect.
