Tis' time for an update.

It's been a twisted and upsetting... yet enlightening few months.

Tim and I broke up after 2 years of dating and called off the engagement. It was probably the most difficult experience I've ever been though... yet best thing to happen now that I took some time to process, reflect and move on. He finally is moving his stuff out, I'm getting a new roommate and I'm loving the freedom of doing whatever I want to do, whenever I feel like doing it.

I did manage to lose my weight! I got down to 110. I took a vegetarian pledge for PETA for the month of June and I'm going to continue to be vegetarian... well a Pescetarian, I love my fish. smile

And I adopted a new love of my life 3 weeks ago - Tobias (named after our favorite never-nude). He appears to be an American Bulldog/Dalmation mix and he's about 56 pounds. I love him, even though he is endlessly demanding with his teenage years energy and ADD. He knows sit, stay, lie down, and come and is pretty housebroken.

Doggy advice needed:
• I've been trying to take him to the park but he tramples over the little dogs with his clumsiness and tries to hump everyone else.
* I put him out back to go potty and he's great, however when I put him back there for more than a few minutes when I'm busy and can't watch him that second, he will bark and yip and whine. I try to ignore it until I'm ready to let him back in but I'm afraid I'll annoy my neighbors.
* He tries to get up on the table and counters. I say no or make a sharp noise to get him down but he still tries when I'm not looking
* He has a TON of energy. How long should I walk him?

That is all for now, peekture time!

If you are able, walk him twice a day. Before you go to work and in the evening. This will git rid of some of his energy. if you have a park close or in the backyard, play games, etc...

Also, if you have a good training group in the area, train him there or on your own. This will stop his bad habits.

How old is he? We found this thing called the Gentle Leader which helped curb our dog's enthusiasm. It looks a little like a harness mixed with a muzzle. It doesn't restrict his ability to open his mouth and it's set that it's not so intrusive that he always wants to take it off. The key is that the wider he opens his mouth, the more pressure it exerts on the back of his neck. Don't worry, it's not painful or anything, but it's supposed to emulate the pressure a mama dog puts on the back of a puppy's neck when she is correcting him.

It really helped keep him in check without being mean or painful. Especially when walking him.

But to get rid of the energy, I agree with Formula74. Twice a day. He'll calm down as he gets older, but until then... I recommend finding ways where he does all of the running. Like fetch. That's kind of tricky sometimes at parks, particularly dog parks. Wish I had more advice, but unfortunately there hasn't been much of a chance to have one of my own over the last six years. I'm going back almost ten to when my dad's dog was a puppy.

In an unrelated note, the SG Pinups for Soldiers group sent me some of the card decks. As I flipped through the girls that you ALWAYS see on every freaking SG promo, I was very happy to see one of the ones from my Friends' List--WMMR's Hottest Tattooed Girl in Philly. Love the pic!

ohhhhh what a handsome boy!!!! love
hes young so he will need lots of long walks. those breeds are very high energy and need a firm hand when it comes to training. Mine didnt start to calm down til she was about 6. the most important things are to be consistent and dont set him up for failure. sometimes a few pennies in an empty soda can with the hole taped up can help barking. just shake it when they bark. its startling and they usually dont like the sound. i got my pit bull/dalmation to stop too much barking by spraying her mouth with bitter apple spray when she barked too much. you have to do that kind of thing as soon as it happens so they know what theyre doing is bad and always say NO when they get punished. The only thing that sucks about that is if I want at home I wasnt sure if she was barking a lot or not. Any time she barked too much id just get the spray, open her mouth a bit and give a tiny spritz. its harmless but tastes TERRIBLE. got the point across pretty quick.
aaand yes, a gentle leader or Halti head harness is good for walking because hes prolly a strong boy and can pull hard. I had one on my pit bull til she calmed down and it was a god send.

and congrats on losing the weight! i know how hard that can be and how amazing it feels when you accomplish it. yay!

ere is what you need. They call them a gentle walker or something like that. No shocks and the dog can still pant and look around. I got one for Nama, she is a part Chow and part German Shepherd and she would pull me everywhere. The trick to the collar is I had to let her walk and let it pull her snout down. Once she realized that she could not see when she tried to pull me she settled down. I love it. Plus Nama can be a little on the aggressive side towards people. With this collar if need be I can shut he mouth to prevent her from biting anybody. However if someone is going to be stupid and try and rob me or something, then it is real easy to let her out of this collar as well. smile If I may you replaced one dog with anotherwink If this these tips have been pointed out I apologize. I did not bother to read through all of your comments.

Doggie advice:

When he jumps on your table, etc., or for any other inside the house fuckup, put him outside in the backyard for a while and scold him saying "NO!" every time he does it. If he scratches at your back door put up curtains and let him back in after 20 minutes or so and make him sick before he come back in. Don't let him dominate you, be the "Pack Leader." I'd say walk him at least 30 minutes a day. For the dog park I guess supervise him more. Watch "The Dog Whisperer." wink

I am glad that some good has come from your difficult situation. ^_^ I know that sounds weird but the relationship I was in for two years ended a couple months ago and its still hard sometimes to see that it was for the best.

Congrats on the weight loss, though I personally don't think you needed it

Cute dog. Is he neutered? that can help explain some of the things you listed

Hopefully you have your doggy issues sorted out by now but just in case. My advice: get a cat. Seriously, dogs are totally co-dependent pets. That getting up on the counters when you're not looking, that's his way of saying: Look at me! Pay attention to me!

If responding, please note that "cold insensitive joke" has already been taken this week.

just kidding about dogs. they are very loyal and can make excellent pets. (i do think cats are a bit more laid back, though.)
